5 Tips To Get The Cheapest Car Hire Price

I’m going to keep this blog post short and sweet seeing as there is not a lot to getting the cheapest car hire price, except actually executing the steps below. If you don’t do these 5 things you will more than likely pay more than you need to, and on a backpacker budget we need every penny we have…

1. Don’t arrive into your destination and then try hire a car from the airport. Like most things in life these days, if you book online you’ll get it cheaper. On average I’ve found it to be around 20% cheaper booking online beforehand.

2. When booking online make sure to do a thorough car hire comparison. Don’t just book on the first site you find. Save the search and come back to it if you find it’s the cheapest.

3. If there’s 5 seats in the car, try get 4 other people to share the journey with you! It may be a bit cramped for those sitting in the back, but the price of a car and fuel stays the same no matter how many people are travelling in it. Even 1 other person will split your costs in half. If you’re staying in a hostel ask around, there are usually a lot of backpackers open to the idea of a road trip.

4. Consider booking your insurance as a stand alone separate entity. Sometimes it can be cheaper overall.

5. Road trip in countries with cheaper fuel. The UK usually comes in the top 3 or thereabouts in the most EXPENSIVE countries in the world for fuel prices. If you’re feeling a bit adventurous you may want to consider destinations such as Venezuela or Egypt where fuel is a lot cheaper.
