With the departure date of my trip to South America looming, and my Spanish skills not improving at as fast as I’d like, I knew something needed to be done. I needed to go that extra mile! In order to quicken the pace in which I’m learning I’ve decided to start writing in Spanish!
I’ve set up a little WordPress blog called Ayúdame a Aprender Español (which means Help Me to Learn Spanish). In it I’m going to be documenting my language learning process and journey. My hope is that people who do speak Spanish natively or fluently will help to correct any mistakes that I make along the way. The act and repetition of writing all the time in Spanish will hopefully make words stick in my memory longer (as well as helping me get more used to the sentence structure.) Spanish is in actual fact not a hard language to learn in terms of difficulty. The grammar and verb patterns etc are all fairly easy to understand. The main issue I have is just making words/vocabulary and grammar rules stick in my memory long term. Unfortunately I am just not someone who picks up foreign languages easily, but I think that will make the achievement feel more poignant when/if I do ever manage something close to fluency in the years to come.
It would also be cool (aside from my own wants/needs to learn the language) to simply be able to connect with people in another language whether or not they speak English too. As Nelson Mandela once said; “Speak to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.”
Meeting and connecting with new people all around the world is probably my favourite aspect of travel. I feel like I’ll be able to do this better and with more people if I can speak another language, especially one like Spanish that is spoken so widely across the world. I also just have a love for the Spanish speaking world. Everything from the music to the salsa and the food just draws me in. I would like very much to learn and connect more.
Of course, I should add that just because I’m writing in Spanish over on my little Spanish blog doesn’t mean anything on RunawayJane.com is going to stop. I plan to continuing writing in English here as I have done for the last 3.5 years. You can still expect my usual travel tips & advice based articles to appear here regularly, as per usual!
