Top 5 Things to do in Arequipa (Peru)

Arequipa was not somewhere I had planned to go originally on my tour of South America, nor indeed did I even know how to locate it on a map of Peru until about 2 weeks ago! Regardless, I was quite taken by the city when I arrived and wanted to highlight some cool things about it here. So with that in mind here are the top 5 things to do in Arequipa, Peru!

Activities & Views at Misti Volcano

If you’re into adventure sports, nearby Misti Volcano offers a platform for a range of activities including volcano biking and climbing. Then there are of course just the views. Arequipa has some stunning views of Misti Volcano from the bridge on Puente Grau street and also from the main square at Plaza de Armas, where the volcano peeps out from behind the cathedral in stunning fashion.

Explore the architecture of ‘The White City’

The architecture in central Arequipa is beautiful. In fact, the intricate design and fresh colour of the buildings was probably my favourite thing about the city. I could honestly walk around here for days just taking in the pretty white buildings and not get bored. Even something as simple as a door would have me captivated. It is definitely a cool city for this reason.

The Free Walking Tour

I think I went on possibly the most ‘unique’ free walking tour I’ve ever been on while in Arequipa. Aside from just the usual free walking aspect and the guide telling you the history, there was also free food tastings, a raffle, and a trip to a petting zoo? It was certainly the most original free tour I’ve ever been on and is worth going on for that very reason.

It’s beautiful. ‘Nuff said.

San Camilo Market

I went here to buy a padlock and discovered a really cool little atmospheric market very close to the main square at Plaza de Armas. It’s definitely the place to go if you want to buy some cheap goods and get an insight into the life of a local here in Arequipa.

– Arequipa is a great city to use a stop over between Bolivia and Cusco. This was initially my reason for stopping in the city, but what I found in the process was a really beautiful city with stunning views and very friendly local people.

  1. Great post! I really enjoyed visiting Convento de Santa Catalina. So much color! It’s also a great base if you want to head to the Colca Canyon area.

WOOW! I heard a lot about Peru, last Christmas my friends went there and they visited to Machu Picchu and Scared Valley. They had real fun, I wanted to go but because of job I couldn’t. I love to visit “The White City” I heard lots of stories and legends.

    Nice Post Jane
