International Student Identity Card (ISIC)

The International Student Identity Card is a available to full-time students and Gap Year travellers with a confirmed deferred or UCAS placement. There are over 40,000 discounts available in over 100 countries, and the card is accepted most places Worldwide. Discounts include things like guidebooks, restaurants, travel gear, hotels, tours, attractions, museums, galleries, and much more. There is no maximum age for the ISIC, however you must be, or have a place, on a full time academic course. The card cost £9.

International Youth Travel Card (IYTC)

An alternative to the Student Identity Card, the International Youth Travel Card is available to anyone under 26, whether you are studying or not, and is accepted Worldwide. There are over 20,000 discounts available with the IYTC on stuff such as guidebooks, music, eating out, transport, and entertainment. The card cost £9.

International Teachers Identity Card (ITIC)

This one may be of particular interest to those teaching English as a foreign language. The International Teacher Identity Card (ITIC) gives you thousands of travel, online, and lifestyle discounts. It’s accepted Worldwide, includes a free global roaming SIM, and costs around £9. There are thousands of discounts worldwide with the ITIC, including in Australia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Egypt, Denmark, France, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Tanzania, UK, and USA. You’ll get discounts on restaurants, guidebooks, travel gear, hotels, tours, attractions, museums, galleries, audio phrase books, CDs & DVDs, takeaways, and carbon offsetting. Your ITIC sees you right through the academic year.  It’s valid from Sept, for up to 16 months, till Dec the following year. Full-time teachers, lecturers, professors, tutors and other educational professionals are eligible.  Just show a Faculty ID, letter on letterhead stationary or other suitable document confirming your employment status.

Hostelling International/YHA Card

The YHA Card gives you access to over 4000 Hostelling International Youth Hostels in over 80 countries around the world. The card gives you discounts at some local attractions and retail outlets as well as a subscription to the YHA Triangle Magazine. The Under 26 Membership Card offers you reduced membership rates, but does not include subscription to YHA Triangle magazine or their Hostel guide. Prices for Under 26 Youth Hostel Association (YHA) Membership Card = £10, and for those 26 and over Youth Hostel Association (YHA) Membership Card = £15.50

Hostel Discount Cards

Many large hostel chains offer discount cards for use at their own hostels. The large hostel chain Nomads is one in particular which is very popular. The Nomads card gives you access to discounts at 600 hostels in 23 countries around the world. The card benefits those travelling in the UK, USA, and Australia. There are also a number of discounts on internet access, phone cards etc, and the price of the card is £14. Even if you are not staying at a Nomads hostel, if you are staying at a chain hostel somewhere in the world, they may have their own equivalent, so always ask at reception!

VIP Backpackers Card

The VIP Backpackers Card offers discounts on bus travel, fights, activities, restaurants, and more. As far as I am aware, there is no age limit for the VIP Backpackers Card, and the price for 1 year is 17GBP. There are currently over 1,200 VIP independently owned and operated resorts across 83 countries, including:

  • Over 200 in Australia, NZ, and Fiji
  • 65 in Africa
  • 400 in Europe
  • 170 in Northern, Central, and South America

Depending on where you buy the card from i.e. which country, from the official website, or from another company, you can also get things like a free mobile sim pack, further discounts on coach travel with the VIP Backpackers Card.
