Top 5 things to do in Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is the third largest and second most populated island in the Canary Islands. It is a popular destination all year round, due in most part to its position about 150 kilometres off the north western coast of Africa, meaning it has warm temperatures all year round, and also many cheap flights to Gran Canaria available from most parts of Western Europe.

Sometimes described as the “Hawaii of the Atlantic”, Gran Canaria has some incredible surf beaches! Whether or not it lives up to it’s comparisons to Hawaii I do not know (I have yet to visit Hawaii), but there are certainly some great surfing waves. There are a few good surf schools who offer lessons for any of those new to surfing, or alternatively you can experience some of the many other water sports available on the island, such as sailing, windsurfing, jet skiing, and scuba diving, amongst many others…

Gran Canaria offers many opportunities for keen hikers. With its inhabited cave villages, lake side walks, and spectacular mountain scenery, there is a lot here to offer hikers. There is a large variety of hikes on existing trails, many of which are off the beaten track. The warm climate also makes for more enjoyable trekking, and adds to some of the stunning views available.

Hang out at the beach

Gran Canaria is an island with a warm climate. Regardless of the time of year, the weather is usually good enough to hang out at the beach, sunbathe, or take part in other typical beach activities. It can be a great place to escape Northern Europe in winter, for a sunny beach break.

Canarian cuisine

If you want to experience something unique to the Canary Islands, then why not try some local Canarian cuisine? Typically, much of the Canarian diet revolves around sea food. Dishes such as Gofio, Squid rings, Octopus, and Chancletes al Limon can be found on the island. Non fish or sea food dishes include Papas arrugadas con mojo (salted potatoes with a spicy mix), and a variety of grilled meats. Throughout the island’s most populated areas there are also a variety of international restaurants to choose from.

Puerto de Mogán

If you are looking for a day trip on the island, Puerto de Mogán is a picturesque resort and fishing village based on the south west coast of Gran Canaria. The Friday market is a great chance to mingle with locals and tourists alike, but more importantly, Puerto de Mogán is simply just a beautiful town offering some great picture opportunities!
